Ramadan

Ramadan is a Muslim holiday that is huge over here. It starts Oct 5th and goes through Nov 4th (this year). During that time fasting is required from sunrise to sunset, but one may eat and drink at night. They believe that the fasting is supposed to be a full body experience: No drinking, drugs, smoking, eating... No looking at bad or sinful things... No listening to gossip or talking bad about someone... No smelling any foods or extremely good and tempting smells... No one should even set foot in a bad place... Everyone should try to get along better and pray for spiritual purity during this time.

We'll see how this goes. They are expecting some action from those not participating, but I'm hoping it will be quiet. I'll keep you posted. In the mean time, enjoy a special greeting for Ramadan :)

So will you be avoiding bad stuff along with them?

When I was in high school there was a (white) girl who observed this holiday because her stepdad was Muslim. She wore a veil and fasted. I thought she was just doing it for attention. I guess I'm a cynic.

I am going to fast on the first day...after that I will refrain from sins of the ears, of the feet, of the nose, of the mind, but I will probably start eating as usual after the first day. I will try to get along better with everyone and pray more and eat less sugars and drink more water.
