The Secret Life of Bees
I have been reading "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. It is an interesting fiction set in 1960s South Carolina. There is an interesting mix
of racial issues along with family trials and tribulations. I can't really relate to any of it, but it is a 13 year old girl's personal story which seems to be making her too old too quick. I am 100 plus pages through due to her personable nature and how she seems to be searching for answers to life questions, along with the eccentric bee keepers that have embraced her and her nanny during troubled times. I have not read this book.
Currently reading Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan
My usual ways of picking books: A new book in a series is released (KOD for example); a new book by an author I enjoy comes out; a friends suggestion - I read The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan after SGM mentioned it; random books from the library that just look like they might be interesting
I don't know who got me started on reading. I've always been a reader from the time I learned how. I have far too many books for my own good and I think they're starting to multiply on their own!
I have grown to love reading.
I love most girly fictions :)
I pick books at the moment by best sellers. I have found that I am the average person when it comes to taste. I usually like the same thing the marority does.
I began reading books for pleasure when I started attending BSC.
That's funny, I took less pleasure in reading after starting at BSC!! I was always a voracious reader, but all that reading for all those classes kind of wore me down. And now that I'm mega-addicted to TV and the Internet, I don't read as much.
I sometimes choose books based on others' recommendations, but I don't always like what the "majority" likes, so I go by the individual and whether or not we have similar taste. I have a few favorite authors. Other than that, I sometimes will pick up something with an interesting title.
I've just started Amy Tan's newest novel, Saving Fish From Drowning. It's very different from her previous novels, and I don't know yet if I'm going to get into it or not.
I'm still wading through that Goldie Hawn book I posted about...it's kind of boring! I don't understand, she has so much personality!
I haven't read this book, but hear it is good from several sources.
I just finished "Reading Lolita in Tehran" about a female Iranian literature professor and her experiences during the iranian revolution. She also starts a secret book group after the sever oppression of women sets in for her former female students... LLG you would like it as you are super-familiar w/ the middle east!! it is a true story/ memoir.
I am currently reading "A Million Little Pieces," on loan from one of Paul's HS students, actually. It is also in Oprah's Book Club (which I love all of those selections i have read)... about a young man's journey through rehab from all sorts of drugs. Really interesting b/c he rejects a 12 step program and is an atheist, therefore lacking 2 stalwarts of most recovery programs.
I just mostly work off of recommendations, although I wish sometimes that I could get monthly rec's so I don't fall into the same old things (magazines!).
I am actually thinking of starting a book club w/ a few friends @ the beginning of the year.
Both my parents instilled a love of reading in me at a very young age. I love to read and now that I am out of college, actually can read for pleasure!
LL- you should seriously check out those 2 books I mentioned. Well, everyone should!
Have fun!
